Spotsylvania County, also known as “Crossroads of the Civil War”, is a flourishing county in Northern Virginia (Nova). The County seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse, a census-designated place. The population of Spotsylvania was estimated to be about 130,674 people in 2015. Spotsylvania real estate is located just 42 miles south of Washington, D.C., the capital of the nation, and 58 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. The prime location, historic Spotsylvania homes, rich history and many other factors have contributed to making “Spotsy” one of the fastest growing counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This small town community incorporates southern hospitality with modern amenities, countryside living, National Parks and major employment hubs into one spectacular place to live.

Spotsylvania County homes are rural, beautiful and family-oriented. There are quaint charming affordable homes for homebuyers that are new to the market and families on a budget. On the flip side, there are also massive luxury estates on several acres of land. Hundreds of homes for sale in Spotsylvania County are available, offering an impressive variety of options within 45 miles of the nation’s capital. Much of the beloved properties are historic ones from the 18th and 19th centuries. A lot of colonial homes have been preserved and restored to keep the area’s history alive, and the cost of buying here is less than many of the suburbs closer to Washington, D.C., so it’s a great place to be close to the capital and still live comfortably. Spotsylvania County has no incorporated towns or cities at this point, but there are several census-designated places throughout the county, including: Alsop, Arcadia, Bells Crossroad, Belmont, Chancellorsville, Five Mile Fork, Olivers Corner, Partlow, Shady Grove Corner, Post Oak and a couple dozen more.

The history of Spotsylvania County dates back to the European encounter in 1608 when James Smith made his appearance to settle in Jamestown and colonize the area. The inhabitants at the time were a Siouan-speaking tribe known as the Manahoac Indians. Spotsylvania County was established in 1721 from the counties of Essex, King and Queen and King William. The name is derived from Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia. There were several battles fought here during the American Civil War including the Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Wilderness, Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson, a Confederate general during the Civil War, was shot and fatally wounded in Spotsylvania County leading to his death at a Guinea Station nearby a few days later.

Spotsylvania County Public Schools serve over 24,000 students in 17 elementary schools, 7 middle schools and 5 high schools, as well as a career and technical center. There are also several private schools, as follows: Fredericksburg Academy, Fredericksburg Christian School, Odyssey Montessori, Saint Patrick, Saint Michael the Archangel High and Faith Baptist Christian School. For continuing education, Germanna Community College is located here as part of the Virginia Community College system.

There are many points of interest in Spotsylvania County including Lake Anna State Park, Civil War historic sites and battlefields, shopping, trolley winery tour, the courthouse, Town Centre and the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park. Lake Anna highlights the beauty of this nature-focused community. This is one of Virginia’s most popular lakes with 13,000 acres of scenery, sailing, water-skiing, sport fishing, horseback riding, bicycling and hiking. People also enjoy coming for relaxing picnics in nature. There’s a fishing pond for children and the disabled, so everyone can enjoy their time in this beautiful place.

Spotsylvania Courthouse Village is Spotsylvania’s downtown. Concerts and festivals are held year round at the Village Pavilion, and the area itself has become lively with social activity. The village encompasses the small-town community feel of the area and brings people together to enjoy some southern hospitality, historic places and modern amenities. The National Military Park is a blast from the past taking you back to the Civil War era. Locals and visitors can join in on walking tours through the park led by park historians. If you enjoy learning about and/or seeing historic sites, you can also go on the Journey through Hollow Grounds to see the homes and birthplaces of 9 U.S. Presidents.

Spotsylvania County is truly a one-of-a-kind place to visit and live. The community is just as unique as its name. The county’s heritage goes back further than the Civil War, Revolutionary War, African-American history and Native-American history the area tries its best to preserve. From outdoor recreational opportunities to taking a walk through centuries past and living in some of the greatest historic Spotsylvania real estate, there is no shortage of good memories to be made. Not to mention the proximity to Virginia beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains, historic Williamsburg, Richmond, VA and Washington, D.C.! Vacations are just a road-trip away, and many of them can be educational for children and adults alike. Family field trips could happen every other weekend. How many people can say they live in the rural country-side while they spend their weekends in the mountains, at the beach or touring the capital or America?
