Life In Stafford VA
Stafford, Virginia is located in between the historic town of Fredericksburg and the military base at Quantico. Stafford has it's own unique qualities to offer its residents. The area of Widewater is about 15 square miles located in Stafford County and is roughly bordered by the Marine Corps Base at Quantico to the north, the Potomac River to the east, Aquia Harbor and Aquia Creek to the south, and Interstate 95 to the west. It includes open space and woodland, two-lane roads and unpaved stretches, bungalows and townhouses, waterfront homes and acreage estates. It's tucked away from all the mania of living in the city but is close enough to Garrisonville and commuter routes so that travel is not an inconvenience. In 2006, a large part of the area was acquired by Virginia to become a state park. Phase 1, which is due for a 2016 completion date, includes a boat launch, pier fishing, a picnic area, a playground, canoe-in campsites, a one-mile loop trail, and several road improvements. Another scenic area of Stafford is Government Island, a historic 18th &19th century quarry site which provided Aquia Sandstone for the building of the U.S. Capitol, White House and other government buildings in Washington D.C. Today, it is a 17 acre nature preserve and archeological site with a boardwalk and 1.5 mile trail. And of course not to be forgotten is George Washington's boyhood home at Ferry Farm. Open to the public for an $8 admission fee ($4 for students), visitors can go on the self guided tour and enjoy walking trails, views of the Rappahannock River, and watch for birds in the Wild Meadow.
